Passengers Removed from BA Flight Due to Extreme Heat Issues

A British Airways flight from Florence to London faced an unusual situation last week when twenty passengers were removed to ensure the aircraft could take off safely. On August 11, 2023, the heat at Amerigo Vespucci Airport reached a staggering 35C, which affected the aircraft’s performance and necessitated the removal of passengers to reduce weight.
The BA Embraer ERJ-190 was scheduled to depart for London City Airport, but the extreme temperatures made it challenging to achieve the required cruising altitude. The airport’s relatively short runway, measuring only half the length of London Gatwick’s main track, compounded the issue. According to a passenger, a British mother on board, the airline initially requested that 36 people disembark. Ultimately, only about 20 passengers volunteered to leave the aircraft.
The pilot explained that due to the high temperature, additional fuel was needed for the engine to operate effectively. This situation arises because heat makes the air less dense, which reduces lift and engine thrust, making it more difficult for the plane to reach takeoff speed. Additionally, pilots must consider a concept known as “density altitude,” which estimates the aircraft’s performance based on temperature. When the density altitude is too high, it can exceed the aircraft’s operational limits, prompting airlines to reduce weight by offloading passengers, cargo, or fuel.
A spokesperson for British Airways addressed the incident, stating, “Due to the unique nature of the airfield with its short runway, extreme temperatures affect air pressure, so aircraft weight must be reduced. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Our teams worked hard to get passengers to their destination as quickly as possible.”
While the situation was certainly uncommon, it highlights the impact of extreme weather on aviation operations. Airlines often face challenges when temperatures rise, particularly at airports with shorter runways. The removal of passengers in this instance underscores the importance of safety in air travel, ensuring that aircraft can operate safely under varying conditions.
