Solskjaer Surprised by McTominay’s Transfer to Napoli
Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed his surprise over the club’s decision to sell academy graduate Scott McTominay to Napoli in the summer of 2024. The transfer fee was approximately £30 million, and McTominay has since made a significant impact in Italy, contributing to Napoli’s league title victory last season.
McTominay’s journey at Manchester United began under Jose Mourinho, but it was under Solskjaer’s leadership that he made the most appearances, featuring in a total of 115 matches and scoring 14 goals during his tenure. Solskjaer discussed the midfielder’s potential and the missed opportunity to fully utilize his skills at United.
“I was almost shocked because you need or want a core of the local lads, ones who get the club. Scott did,” Solskjaer remarked on the Stick to Football podcast. He highlighted McTominay’s talent and leadership qualities, noting that he excelled in Italy, even being voted Serie A Player of the Year last season.
Solskjaer further elaborated on the tactical challenges in his squad, stating, “In my squad, Scotty probably wasn’t allowed to play in his best position enough, yeah [because of] Bruno and maybe the lack of physicality that we had.” He recalled specific matches, such as those against Leeds, where McTominay’s offensive contributions shone through.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane also weighed in on McTominay’s transfer, acknowledging the midfielder’s success at Napoli, while expressing some skepticism. “I’m always wary when lads leave for a club like Napoli now, but it’s a different challenge to Man United and he’s done well,” Keane stated. He added that while McTominay is a capable player, he was not someone he would rely upon as a decisive factor in United’s success.
In his first season with Napoli, McTominay scored 12 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions. So far this season, he has netted four goals in 14 appearances, including matches in both Serie A and the Champions League.
The sale of McTominay raises questions about Manchester United’s strategy in retaining homegrown talent, particularly players who understand the club’s culture and expectations. With McTominay thriving in Italy, it may prompt a reassessment of how the club develops and utilizes its young players in the future.
Fans and analysts alike are left to ponder the implications of this transfer as Manchester United continues to navigate its competitive landscape in the Premier League. Solskjaer’s comments not only reflect on McTominay’s abilities but also highlight the ongoing challenge for clubs balancing talent development with tactical needs.
