Tensions Escalate as Fighting Resumes on Cambodia-Thailand Border
Fighting between Cambodia and Thailand has intensified, resulting in the evacuation of over 100,000 civilians as both nations accuse each other of initiating hostilities. The renewed clashes erupted following a skirmish on March 24, 2024, which left two Thai soldiers injured, undermining a previous ceasefire aimed at resolving territorial disputes.
Escalation of Conflict
Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, has issued a strong warning to Thailand, describing its actions as a “reprehensible act.” In a statement shared on social media platforms Facebook and Telegram, Sen claimed that Cambodia had initially refrained from retaliation but began to respond after Thai forces engaged in aggressive actions against Cambodian positions.
“Cambodia wants peace, but Cambodia is forced to fight back to defend its territory,” Sen stated, emphasizing the need for his country to re-engage in conflict despite its preference for diplomatic resolutions. The ongoing violence has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating that at least seven civilians have died and over 20 have been injured on the Cambodian side, while three Thai soldiers have also been killed.
As both governments prepare for continued military operations, Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s Prime Minister, asserted that Cambodia has not reached out for negotiations. He stated, “We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do,” indicating a firm commitment to military actions deemed necessary for national security.
Humanitarian Impact
In response to the escalating conflict, civilians are being evacuated to temporary shelters across both nations. The Thai military has established approximately 500 shelters, which are currently accommodating 125,838 people. Meanwhile, Cambodia’s Information Minister, Neth Pheaktra, reported that nearly 55,000 individuals have been evacuated from affected areas, and this number is expected to rise as fighting continues.
As accusations fly between the two sides, Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture claimed that Thai forces attacked the historical Ta Krabey temple, labeling it a “profound immorality.” In contrast, the Thai military has alleged that Cambodian forces launched rocket attacks into Thailand’s northeastern province of Surin, further complicating the situation.
The conflict marks a troubling chapter in the long-standing territorial disputes between Cambodia and Thailand. With both sides firmly entrenched in their positions and casualties mounting, the prospect for a peaceful resolution remains uncertain. The international community is watching closely as the situation develops, and calls for dialogue may become increasingly urgent in the coming days.
