UK Families Urged to Save Hedgehogs as Numbers Plummet
Families across the United Kingdom are being called upon to support the dwindling hedgehog population, which has decreased dramatically to an estimated one million individuals, down from 30 million in the 1950s. Ecologists from the environmental consultancy Arbtech have outlined six simple actions households can take to help these vulnerable creatures prepare for hibernation this autumn.
A recent survey conducted by Arbtech revealed that 48% of people in the UK have not spotted a hedgehog in the wild over the past five years. The situation is even more concerning in Scotland, where one in four residents report a similar lack of sightings. Hedgehogs face numerous threats, including habitat destruction, vehicle collisions, and pesticide exposure, which contribute to their vulnerable status. While urban populations show some signs of recovery, rural hedgehogs continue to decline significantly.
As autumn progresses, hedgehogs will begin to increase their food intake and build nests in preparation for the harsh winter months ahead. The hibernation period poses serious risks for these mammals, including exposure to freezing temperatures, predators, and starvation if they do not accumulate sufficient fat reserves.
Leo Plevin from Arbtech emphasizes the importance of small actions that families can take to assist hedgehogs. “Hedgehogs are disappearing before our own eyes, but the good news is that families can make a real difference,” he stated. “Small things like leaving out a bowl of water, creating a gap in your fence, or even just leaving a pile of leaves in your garden can all help hedgehogs to thrive.”
Simple Steps to Support Hedgehogs
To help hedgehogs during this critical period, consider implementing the following six suggestions:
1. **Create Passageways**: Leave small gaps in fences to allow hedgehogs to roam freely. This will help them search for food and mates.
2. **Eliminate Chemicals**: Avoid using slug pellets, pesticides, and other chemicals that can poison hedgehogs if ingested.
3. **Provide Shelter**: Hedgehogs need safe spaces to hibernate. Offer materials like piles of leaves and logs for them to build nests, or consider a purpose-built hedgehog house.
4. **Set Up Feeding Stations**: Designate a spot as a “hedgehog café” where they can safely access food and water away from potential dangers. Use a sturdy box with a hedgehog-sized entrance, and offer food such as plain kitten biscuits or meat-based wet dog food.
5. **Fresh Water Supply**: Provide shallow bowls of fresh water, as hedgehogs typically obtain hydration from natural sources. Avoid offering milk, as hedgehogs are lactose intolerant.
6. **Monitor Health**: If you encounter a hedgehog during daylight hours, it may signal an issue. Look for signs of illness such as lethargy or difficulty moving, and contact local rescue groups for assistance.
By taking these steps, families can contribute significantly to the survival of hedgehogs, ensuring that these beloved creatures can thrive and emerge safely from hibernation in the spring.
