Young Girl Falls 50 Feet from Disney Cruise Ship During Photo Op
A five-year-old girl fell approximately 50 feet from the Disney Dream cruise ship into the ocean while posing for a photograph near an open porthole on June 29, 2023. The incident occurred shortly after her mother asked her to stand by the railing for a picture. The girl lost her balance and plunged into the water, prompting her father to dive in after her just 45 seconds later.
The quick response of the crew was evident as a mayday call was issued and a yellow rescue boat was launched within three minutes of the girl’s fall. Remarkably, she was rescued without serious injuries. Her father was later treated for an unspecified issue following the incident.
Initial reports included unfounded rumors suggesting that the father had lifted his daughter onto the railing for the photograph. However, authorities in Florida have clarified that this was not the case. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation, interviewing the parents, who provided accounts consistent with security camera footage from the ship.
Investigation Findings
State attorney Melissa Kelly announced on September 16 that while the mother’s actions could be viewed as negligent, they did not meet the threshold for criminal culpable negligence. Consequently, the state attorney declined to pursue charges. Kelly stated, “While the defendant’s conduct is arguably negligent and irresponsible, it does not rise to the egregious level of conduct necessary to establish criminal culpable negligence.”
The investigation revealed that the mother had taken several photographs of her daughter near the railings during the cruise. In a police report, she shared an image of her daughter lying in a porthole, which drew attention to the safety concerns of open portholes on cruise ships. The mother reportedly expressed concerns about the lack of coverings on the windows and suggested that Disney bears responsibility for the incident.
The case has since been closed, with authorities indicating that there were no grounds for further action against the parents. The family’s experience highlights ongoing discussions regarding safety protocols on cruise ships, particularly for young children, and the need for vigilance in such environments.
