Today Show in Talks to Replace Co-Host Sarah Abo with Samantha Armytage
The *Today* show is reportedly in discussions to replace co-host Sarah Abo with acclaimed presenter Samantha Armytage in a strategic move aimed at boosting ratings. According to *The Australian*, the Nine Network is exploring this change as part of its efforts to reclaim dominance in breakfast television, previously held by rival program *Sunrise*.
The potential pairing of Armytage and *Today* host Karl Stefanovic, both seasoned television personalities, is being described as a “dream team” that could rejuvenate the morning show’s appeal. Armytage, who previously anchored *Sunrise* from 2013 until her departure in 2021, is seen as a significant draw, having previously helped secure strong ratings for her former show.
Nine’s CEO, Matt Stanton, did not deny the rumors when questioned about Abo’s future, responding cryptically, “I don’t know. I’m not into that level to be honest, I haven’t seen that level of detail.” This ambiguity leaves room for speculation about Abo’s position, especially given her reported push for a salary increase.
Abo, who joined *Today* in 2023, replaced outgoing host Allison Langdon, who moved to *A Current Affair*. Currently, Abo’s salary is around $800,000 per year, in stark contrast to Stefanovic’s reported contract of $3 million. This disparity highlights ongoing discussions surrounding gender pay equity in the industry.
Recent reports suggest that Nine has agreed to significant salary increases for Stefanovic, who was previously earning $2.8 million. Sources within the network indicate that this increase came following Stefanovic’s threat to leave if he did not receive a competitive offer. In comparison, his co-host Abo’s earnings place her far below the average for male counterparts in similar positions.
The network’s strategy appears to be heavily influenced by the “Armytage effect,” a term used to describe the boost in ratings that occurred when Armytage joined *Sunrise*. As she moves into new projects, including hosting the upcoming series *Golden Bachelor*, her star power continues to grow.
With *The Golden Bachelor* expected to air following *The Block*, Nine is betting on Armytage’s popularity to attract viewers. A source noted, “It’s just good TV, and she’s a pro. She knows exactly how to play the part.”
As the discussions around Abo’s future and the potential inclusion of Armytage unfold, the television landscape remains watchful. The outcome could significantly impact the competitive dynamics of breakfast television in Australia, where viewer preferences play a critical role in shaping programming decisions.
As this story develops, both Nine Network and the involved parties have yet to provide an official comment regarding the ongoing talks.
