Bengal Tiger Found Dead After Escape During Mexico Floods
A Bengal tiger weighing approximately 130 kg has been found dead after escaping from the Xicotepec Zoo in Puebla, Mexico, during severe flooding caused by recent storms. The animal managed to break free from its enclosure when the nearby San Marcos River overflowed its banks due to torrential rain.
Municipal president Carlos Barragan Amador expressed concerns about the potential danger the tiger posed to local residents. In a statement, he announced that the animal had been located lifeless among trees, stating, “I would have liked to have captured him as planned with a group of specialists, but God only knows why he does these things.” He noted that a young man working with the municipality discovered the tiger after spotting a portion of its arm protruding from the debris.
The flooding in Puebla was part of a broader weather event that affected several regions in Mexico from September 25 to September 28, 2023. During this period, the state of Puebla experienced rainfall totaling 487 mm, leading to widespread destruction, including landslides that buried areas under heavy debris.
Severe Weather Impacts and Casualties
As the storms continued, President Claudia Sheinbaum chaired an emergency committee to address the crisis. Authorities confirmed that at least 44 people have died as a result of the severe weather. Reports indicate that regions such as Veracruz, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, and Queretaro also faced significant challenges due to the storms.
The Federal Commission of Electricity reported that over 320,000 customers were left without power due to the intense weather conditions. The situation prompted officials to mobilize resources for rescue and recovery efforts, although many communities remain grappling with the aftermath of the flooding.
In the case of the escaped tiger, the incident has raised questions about wildlife safety during natural disasters and the measures in place to protect both animals and local residents. The tragic outcome highlights the challenges faced by zoos and animal sanctuaries in disaster-prone areas.
As recovery continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and providing necessary aid to those affected by the floods. The communities in Puebla and across the impacted regions are coming together to support one another in this difficult time, while authorities work to restore normalcy.
