Hague Supports Blair’s Role in Trump’s Gaza Peace Initiative
Former Conservative leader William Hague expressed support for Tony Blair to play a role in the newly proposed Gaza peace initiative, headed by US President Donald Trump. This statement came during the Cheltenham Literature Festival, where Hague emphasized Blair’s extensive knowledge of the Palestinian issue, particularly following the recent release of hostages by Hamas.
The backdrop of Hague’s remarks coincided with an agreement reached in Sharm El Sheikh on March 15, 2024, where key nations, including the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, endorsed Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. The plan was signed after the release of all 20 Israeli hostages held by Hamas, marking a significant step in the ongoing conflict. Notably, Israel and Hamas did not participate in the summit.
Sir Keir Starmer, the current leader of the Labour Party, termed the day a “historic day” but clarified that he had not put himself forward for a role on the peace board chaired by Trump. He stated it was up to others, including Blair, to decide on their involvement.
Hague described Blair’s potential participation as a “good thing,” noting, “I think it is to his credit… since he left office 18 years ago, he has remained utterly preoccupied with the Palestinian issue.” He highlighted that Blair’s expertise could contribute positively to the peace process. “You either have to have the hard power or have some very knowledgeable and persuasive people involved,” Hague added, underscoring Blair’s capabilities in this context.
In discussing the peace plan, Hague characterized it as a demonstration of hard power, stating, “The US can do this because the Gulf leaders want the technology of the US, and the Israeli leaders need the military support of the US.” He warned that for the UK and Europe, who have diminished their hard power, this is a critical lesson.
He further criticized the notion that mere recognition of a Palestinian state by the UK government would yield meaningful results. “People can chant in the streets about Gaza, but it contributes absolutely nothing to resolving the situation,” he said, asserting that genuine resolution requires tangible influence.
The release of the hostages was celebrated across Israel, with families gathering to witness their loved ones’ reunification. The emotional scenes unfolded as the hostages, all men, were welcomed back by their families, illustrating the profound human impact of the recent developments.
The 20-point plan proposed by Trump outlines an extended Israeli military presence along Gaza’s border, with international forces, primarily from Arab and Muslim nations, tasked with maintaining security within the enclave. The Israeli military has indicated it will continue to operate defensively in the areas of Gaza it still controls.
As discussions regarding Blair’s involvement continue, Trump remarked that he appreciates Blair but emphasized the need for consensus regarding his role on the governance board for Gaza. This plan’s next steps involve delicate negotiations, including the disarmament of Hamas and the establishment of a Palestinian authority overseen by an international board.
Overall, the developments signal a complex and fragile path ahead for peace in Gaza, with major powers like the US playing pivotal roles in shaping the future of the region. As the situation evolves, the emphasis will likely remain on whether influential figures, such as Blair, can contribute effectively to these critical discussions.
