Health Experts Warn Against Sharing Vapes After Teen’s Crisis
Medical professionals have issued a stark warning regarding the dangers of sharing vaping devices following a serious health scare involving an 18-year-old woman. Sian Alderton was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis after a night out, raising concerns about the transmission of infectious diseases through shared vaping products.
Dr. Hana Patel, a general practitioner in the United Kingdom, emphasized the risks associated with sharing vapes, stating, “I would not recommend sharing vapes as this can expose you to a number of diseases and viruses.” The warning stems from the potential for vapes to transmit pathogens such as norovirus, flu, the common cold, herpes simplex, and bacteria responsible for meningococcal disease.
Sian’s ordeal began when she initially thought she was suffering from a common illness. Her mother, Kerrie Durrant, noticed red spots on her daughter’s body, prompting a visit to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Within four hours of admission, Sian was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and subsequently placed in a medically induced coma for four days. She spent a total of 14 days in the hospital.
“Doctors have to find a source or where the meningitis bacteria started from,” Kerrie Durrant remarked. During medical evaluations, Sian showed symptoms of sinusitis, leading to the hypothesis that the infection could have been contracted through saliva, potentially from activities such as vaping, kissing, or sharing drinks.
Dr. Keni Ravish Rajiv, a senior consultant in neurology and head of the epilepsy service at Aster CMI Hospital in Bangalore, India, echoed these concerns. He stated, “The pathogens responsible for meningitis can be present in saliva, which means that sharing items such as vapes or drinks could facilitate the transfer of these infectious agents.”
Understanding the Risks of Vaping
In light of these events, experts urge individuals to reconsider their vaping habits. According to Royal Vapery, in addition to avoiding sharing vapes, users should refrain from purchasing counterfeit or low-quality devices and liquids, as these can pose fire risks and contain unknown substances. They also advise against charging vaping devices with random cables or leaving them unattended to prevent overheating and battery venting, as well as using damaged or loose batteries.
The National Health Service (NHS) describes meningitis as an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. If not treated swiftly, it can result in life-threatening sepsis or permanent damage. Symptoms of meningitis and sepsis include a high temperature, cold hands and feet, vomiting, confusion, rapid breathing, muscle and joint pain, and a stiff neck. Notably, symptoms such as spots or a rash may be more difficult to detect on darker skin tones.
As the risks associated with vaping become increasingly highlighted, it is crucial for users to be aware of the potential health threats. The case of Sian Alderton serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of responsible vaping practices and the need for greater awareness of the dangers of sharing these devices.
