EastEnders Star Tony Caunter Passes Away Days After Wife
Tony Caunter, best known for his role as Roy Evans in the long-running British soap opera EastEnders, has died at the age of 88, just eight days after the passing of his wife, Fran Caunter. The couple was married for 63 years, and their family shared this heartbreaking news in a statement on social media.
The family expressed their profound sorrow, stating, “It is with enormous sadness that we bring the curtain down on our wonderful and hugely loved father, Tony Caunter, who died peacefully yesterday evening, just eight days after his beloved wife of 63 years, Fran, also passed away.” They highlighted that Tony leaves behind a legacy, including a daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Tribute from Family and Colleagues
In their statement, the family thanked the medical staff who provided care for Caunter during his final days at the Eastbourne District General Hospital. They said, “We would like to thank the NHS staff at Eastbourne District General Hospital for their incredible care during his final hours, and to everyone at Eastbourne Gardens nursing home for the care and compassion they have given dad over the past two months.” They also requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.
Caunter’s portrayal of Roy Evans on EastEnders from 1994 to 2003 made him a beloved character among fans. Initially introduced as a love interest for Pat Butcher, played by Pam St Clement, the relationship became one of the show’s most memorable storylines. The character’s romantic journey included a memorable on-screen wedding, capturing the hearts of viewers.
Legacy and Career Highlights
Recognised for his warmth and humour, Caunter’s impact extended beyond EastEnders. He was involved in notable productions such as Pennies From Heaven, Tumbledown, Juliet Bravo, and the drama series Boon. His character, Roy, was often at the centre of significant plot developments, including Pat’s complicated relationships and the drama surrounding her former husband, Frank Butcher, portrayed by Mike Reid.
Following the announcement of his passing, EastEnders producers released a statement, expressing their grief. They remarked, “Tony will forever be loved and respected by everyone at EastEnders for his warmth, kindness and humour as well as being greatly remembered by all those at home who instantly took Roy to their hearts.” They acknowledged that Roy’s relationship with Pat, marked by both affection and humorous disagreements, contributed significantly to the show’s legacy.
As the Caunter family reflects on their loss, the entertainment community mourns the passing of a cherished actor whose contributions to television will not be forgotten.
