Liam Payne’s Tragic Death: A Year Later, Questions Remain
One year after the tragic death of former One Direction star Liam Payne, questions surrounding the incident continue to linger. The 31-year-old singer fell from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Palmero Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, 2024. At the time, he was alone, having recently parted ways with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, who had returned to the United States.
In connection with his death, charges have been filed against two hotel employees, Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz, who are accused of supplying drugs to Payne. Both men deny the charges and have been in police custody since January. The legal proceedings have yet to progress, as no trial date has been established. If convicted, they face a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
An inquest conducted in the UK determined that Payne’s cause of death was polytrauma, resulting from multiple injuries. A toxicology report revealed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system at the time of his death. Following the incident, charges of manslaughter were initially brought against Rogelio “Roger” Nores and two other hotel employees, but these charges were later dismissed.
CCTV footage from the hotel reportedly captured Payne asking Pereyra for “seven grams more” during a brief encounter in a hotel lift on the day he died. Prosecutors allege that he had been supplied cocaine at least twice in the weeks leading up to his tragic fall.
As the anniversary of his death approaches, Payne’s family has sought to honor his memory through charitable contributions. They raised £250,000 for a new cancer treatment facility at Great Ormond Street Hospital. In a poignant statement, the hospital noted that the donations would contribute to a new Children’s Cancer Centre, aimed at improving the lives of seriously ill children.
A representative from Great Ormond Street Hospital expressed gratitude for the outpouring of generosity, emphasizing that every contribution helps advance the mission of creating a world-class facility for children battling cancer. “It’s a lasting legacy that will make a difference for generations,” the spokesperson stated.
