Rachel Reeves May Eliminate Controversial Taxi Tax This November
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is poised to announce significant changes to the tax policy regarding private hire vehicles in the upcoming Autumn Budget, scheduled for November 26, 2023. Concerns have been raised over a potential new tax, referred to as a “taxi tax,” which could impose a hefty 20 percent VAT surcharge on private hire journeys. Critics argue that this measure would disproportionately affect vulnerable passengers and working families.
The Labour Party is currently under pressure to reconsider this proposed tax. Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden has publicly opposed the initiative, stating it would “clobber vulnerable passengers” and negatively impact the night-time economy. He emphasized that individuals who rely on private hire services to travel safely after work or social outings would face prohibitive costs if the tax were implemented.
Holden described the potential tax increase as an example of the Labour Party’s failure to address economic challenges adequately. He criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer for lacking a clear plan, suggesting that the proposed tax would merely serve as another “stealth tax” to mask larger economic issues within the party.
A resident from Cornwall expressed outrage over the implications of the taxi tax, sharing personal experiences of high taxi fares that often reach around £100 to £120 for essential trips to the hospital. This individual highlighted that many of the taxi users are elderly residents who cannot drive and are not eligible for financial assistance due to being just above welfare thresholds.
The Chancellor’s office has refrained from commenting on speculation regarding future tax changes. A spokesperson for HM Treasury stated, “The Chancellor makes tax policy decisions at fiscal events. We do not comment on speculation around future changes to tax policy.”
As the Autumn Budget approaches, the pressure mounts on Reeves to clarify her position on the proposed taxi tax and its implications for the economy and the public. The outcome of this decision could significantly impact those who depend on private hire services for their daily needs.
