UK Employers Brace for Surge in Sick Days After Clock Change
Employers in the UK are facing a potential increase in employee sick days following the end of British Summer Time (BST) on October 26, 2025. Experts warn that the clock change, which occurs at 02:00 on Sunday, will disrupt circadian rhythms, leading to adverse effects on both physical and mental health. The first Monday after the time adjustment, October 27, is expected to see a spike in absenteeism.
Data from last year’s clock change indicates a significant rise in workplace absences. According to RotaCloud, a workplace management software provider, sick leave increased by 4.78 percent on the day following the 2024 clock change. This trend suggests that approximately 1.6 million additional workers could be absent on October 27, 2025, if similar patterns hold true across the workforce.
Joel Beverley, co-founder of RotaCloud, emphasized the potential impact of the time shift on employee well-being. He stated, “Disruptions to schedules that come with clock changes can impact employees’ physical and mental health.” With around 34.24 million individuals employed in the UK, even a small percentage increase in sick leave can translate to significant numbers.
James Lintern, also a co-founder at RotaCloud, added that employers should prepare for not just higher absenteeism but also reduced productivity and an increase in workplace accidents during that week.
Health Tips for Managing Seasonal Changes
To help mitigate the potential negative effects of the clock change, RotaCloud consulted with Dr. Suhail Hussain, a general practitioner affiliated with Doctify, who offered several strategies to enhance energy levels during the autumn months. Dr. Hussain suggests engaging in small, manageable exercises, such as quick workouts at home. These “micro bursts” of activity can be effective in maintaining motivation and energy.
Sleep is highlighted as a crucial factor for boosting energy. Dr. Hussain recommends investing in blackout curtains and reducing screen time before bed to promote better sleep quality. Morning sunlight is also beneficial for resetting the body’s internal clock and supporting mood-enhancing serotonin production.
In cases of dreary weather, using a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) lamp can help counteract the effects of reduced natural light. Dr. Hussain noted the effectiveness of light therapy in improving mood and energy levels.
Diet also plays a vital role in maintaining energy. Eating seasonal produce can provide fresher and more nutritious options, which can enhance overall well-being. Including complex carbohydrates, such as wholemeal bread and pasta, is advised to prevent energy slumps throughout the day.
Additionally, certain supplements may offer benefits. Creatine and Vitamin B12 can be particularly helpful, though individuals with certain health conditions should consult a healthcare provider before use. Vitamin D supplements are recommended from September to March, as winter sunlight typically lacks sufficient UVB radiation for natural synthesis in the skin.
Historical Data on Sick Leave Trends
RotaCloud’s analysis reveals that the impact of clock changes on employee sick leave is notably pronounced following the spring clock change. Last year, on March 31, 2025, sick leave increased by 16.17 percent compared to the annual average, amounting to an additional 5.5 million workers absent that day.
As the UK prepares for the upcoming clock change, employers are urged to take proactive measures to manage potential increases in sick leave. By focusing on employee health and well-being, businesses can better navigate the challenges posed by seasonal transitions.
