School Staff Member Dies Following Incident with Pupil
A staff member at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, has tragically died after an incident involving a 14-year-old pupil. According to local police, the victim, identified as Amy Morrell, 53, was attempting to restrain the student when she was allegedly kicked in the chest at approximately 18:55 on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital, Morrell succumbed to her injuries the following day.
The incident unfolded when the teenage girl reportedly tried to leave a residence hall without permission. In the effort to prevent her from leaving, Morrell was struck. Colleagues initiated CPR and summoned emergency services, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The student, whose name has not been released, faces charges of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, as confirmed by the Bristol County District Attorney’s office. The pupil was arraigned on Thursday morning in Fall River Juvenile Court.
A close family friend of Morrell, Andrew Ferruche, expressed his disbelief at the tragic event, stating, “It never crossed my mind. Never thought of it. I couldn’t believe it when I got the call today.” He added, “You get in a fight, you don’t think you’re going to hit somebody and they’re going to die right there – especially if you’re a kid. That child’s life is probably ruined. [Morrell’s] life is gone. It’s just a tragic situation.”
Meadowridge Academy, known for its comprehensive therapeutic residential programs, caters to young individuals aged between 12 and 21 who face mental health and behavioral challenges. The academy, located near the Rhode Island border, had only 35 pupils enrolled last year, emphasizing its focus on tailored support.
Advocates for special needs education are calling for increased attention to incidents like this. Jennie DunKley, who advocates for pupils with special needs, stated, “I want to focus on implementing meaningful strategies and tools that prevent escalation. The best way to prevent restraint and seclusion is to not have a reason to even consider it.”
The Justice Resource Institute, which operates Meadowridge Academy, expressed its sorrow over Morrell’s passing. A spokeswoman stated, “The Meadowridge Academy community is deeply saddened by the passing of direct care staff member, Amy Morrell. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Amy’s family during this difficult time. Support services and resources are available to assist students and staff as we grieve this tragic loss.”
The police investigation into this incident is ongoing, with authorities working to gather more information and ensure that the community receives the necessary support in the aftermath of this event.
