Limp Bizkit Mourns Loss of Founding Bassist Sam Rivers at 48
Limp Bizkit’s founding bassist, Sam Rivers, has passed away at the age of 48. The band announced his death on Saturday via a heartfelt statement on Instagram, revealing that he died earlier that day. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
In their tribute, Limp Bizkit expressed profound grief, stating, “Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat.” The band emphasized Rivers’ integral role, describing him as “the pulse beneath every song” and highlighting his unique talent and unforgettable presence. They added, “He was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human. A true legend of legends,” promising that his spirit will endure in their music and memories.
Fellow band member DJ Lethal shared his shock and sorrow, urging fans to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. He encouraged others to celebrate Rivers’ legacy by playing his basslines, stating, “Rest in power my brother! You will live on through your music and the lives you helped save with your music, charity work, and friendships. We are heartbroken.”
Legacy of a Musical Pioneer
Rivers was a key figure in the formation of Limp Bizkit, joining frontman Fred Durst, drummer John Otto, guitarist Wes Borland, and DJ Lethal during the group’s inception in the 1990s. The band rose to prominence with albums such as Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, featuring hit singles like “Take a Look Around” and the chart-topping “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle).”
After the band took a hiatus in 2006, they reunited in 2009, with Rivers remaining a vital part of the group until a significant health crisis led him to take a three-year break in 2015. He made a triumphant return in 2018 and continued to perform with Limp Bizkit until his untimely death.
The band last performed together at the Reading Festival in August 2025, a testament to their enduring legacy in the music industry. Rivers’ contributions to the band and his impact on fans and fellow musicians alike will not be forgotten.
As tributes continue to pour in from fans and the music community, Limp Bizkit’s heartfelt message encapsulates the profound loss felt by many: “We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always. Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.”
