Arthritis Rising Among Young Adults: Lifestyle Factors at Play
Arthritis, a condition traditionally associated with older adults, is increasingly affecting younger populations. A recent report by Deep Relief reveals that almost half of young adults aged 18 to 34 report experiencing soreness or aching, with alarming figures showing that one in five individuals aged 18 to 24 and 23% of those aged 35 to 44 now suffer from arthritis.
According to pharmacist Noel Wicks, this shift in demographics underscores the need for greater awareness regarding the factors contributing to arthritis among younger individuals. “We often think of arthritis as an issue for older people, but this new report indicates it is no longer confined to that age group,” Wicks stated. “Lifestyle plays a significant role in this worrying trend.”
The rise in screen-based activities appears to be a major contributor. Young people are spending extended periods hunched over laptops, tablets, and smartphones, leading to poor posture and muscular imbalances. Wicks explains that such habits can create a “perfect storm” for strain on the spine and neck, exacerbating joint issues.
Exercise routines, or the lack thereof, also impact joint health. Many young adults do not engage in sufficient physical activity, while those who do often neglect proper form. Skipping warm-ups and cool-downs, or performing strength exercises incorrectly, can lead to injuries. “Even a single session with a personal trainer can provide valuable guidance on maintaining joint health,” Wicks advised.
Dietary choices contribute to this issue as well. High consumption of processed foods, including snacks, can lead to inflammation throughout the body, which may increase the risk of developing arthritis. Wicks highlighted the statistics from 2022, indicating that among males, 35% of those aged 16 to 24, 58% of 25 to 34, and 75% of 35 to 44 were classified as overweight or obese. In females, the figures were 38%, 57%, and 61% respectively.
To mitigate the risk of arthritis, Wicks recommends maintaining an active lifestyle. “Muscle and joint stiffness is common when sitting for long periods. It’s important to move at least once every hour, whether that means stretching or taking a short walk,” he said. Research supports that staying physically active can reduce the severity of pain associated with arthritis.
For those experiencing mild arthritic pain, Wicks suggests topical pain relief as an effective alternative to oral medications, which can have side effects. He also emphasizes the importance of good posture, noting that many young adults suffer from discomfort due to slumping over keyboards or phones. Proper alignment, whether seated or standing, can alleviate strain on muscles and joints.
Exercise should be approached with care. Wicks advises selecting appropriate footwear for running and consulting a personal trainer to ensure safe use of gym equipment. A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, including colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, seeds, and nuts, is also vital for joint health. While meat can be part of a diet, it should not dominate every meal.
Despite some pain being temporary, Wicks stresses that sharp or persistent discomfort is not normal and should prompt a visit to a general practitioner. “If pain interferes with daily life, it’s important to seek professional advice,” he concluded.
As arthritis increasingly affects younger generations, awareness of lifestyle choices and their long-term impact on health becomes crucial. Adopting healthier habits today can help mitigate the risks of this condition in the future.
