TwitchCon Faces Security Concerns as Streamer Exposes Malware

Twitch streamer Lululuvely recently revealed that the PC she used during TwitchCon had a malware program installed, raising significant concerns about security at the event. This year’s convention, held in San Diego, has been marred by various incidents, including an assault on fellow streamer Emiru during a meet and greet. The implications of these events have sparked discussions about the safety measures in place for attendees.

Lululuvely disclosed that the computer she used was not her own and suffered from a security breach due to a program known as SafeFinder. This program, described by Microsoft as a malicious browser hijacker, automatically redirects users to potentially harmful advertisements and websites, posing serious risks to personal data. The revelation adds to the growing list of concerns surrounding TwitchCon’s security protocols following incidents of violence and harassment.

While reflecting on her experience, Lululuvely noted, “I haven’t seen anything about what happened to the computer that I was on, but I’m like so curious if that program was on all the computers at TwitchCon.” She shared that while streaming, the browser began opening automatically and entering text, indicating a compromise of the device’s integrity.

Despite the alarming nature of her discovery, she acknowledged that it wasn’t the worst incident reported during the convention. However, the lack of discussion surrounding the security issues raised questions about the accountability of the event organizers. In response to her concerns, Lululuvely has already changed her passwords as a precaution.

TwitchCon had promised enhanced security measures this year following pre-event warnings from various streamers. However, the incident involving Emiru, where she was assaulted by an attendee, has overshadowed these assurances. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy claimed that security reacted swiftly to remove the assailant, but Emiru has since downplayed this assertion, suggesting that further action was necessary to ensure the safety of participants.

In addition to these incidents, several VTubers expressed their disappointment after claiming that event staff discarded gifts from fans, further highlighting the emotional toll of the convention. Streamers have voiced their concerns about the lack of adequate support and protection while engaging with their audience.
