Historic Walking Football Match Unites Teams in Montgomeryshire
The first-ever walking football match between two teams in Montgomeryshire took place on March 6, 2024, at Abermule’s newly established multi-sport facility. Abermule faced off against Llanfair United in a match that ended in a competitive 2-2 draw. The game was well officiated by Tony Brockley from Wrexham, who ensured that the event ran smoothly.
This fixture marks a significant milestone for Abermule, which was formed three years ago. In contrast, Llanfair United has been active for four years and has participated in various North Wales League tournaments. The match underscores the growing interest in walking football, a format designed to encourage physical activity among older participants and those with limited mobility.
Support for Walking Football Growth
The event was supported by the Football Association of Wales (FAW), which aims to promote walking football across mid-Wales. Officials from the FAW have expressed hopes of establishing a Montgomeryshire Walking Football League in the near future, providing a structured platform for local teams and players.
Abermule Community Centre hosts training sessions every Wednesday at 18:30, while Llanfair United practices on Thursdays at 18:00 at Llanfair Caereinion Leisure Centre. Both clubs welcome new players interested in joining the sport. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Terry Wain or Stuart Tomlinson for more information.
The enthusiasm surrounding walking football in Montgomeryshire reflects a broader movement within the UK to promote inclusive and accessible sports. As clubs continue to form and engage their communities, the potential for growth in participation and local competition appears promising. This initiative not only fosters community spirit but also provides an opportunity for individuals to remain active and socially engaged.
