Sheffield Wednesday’s Future in Jeopardy Amid Takeover Talks
The ownership crisis at Sheffield Wednesday is intensifying as the club faces the prospect of administration. Current owner Dejphon Chansiri remains under fire amid increasing discontent from fans, players, and staff regarding the club’s direction during the 2025/26 season. Sheffield Wednesday’s decline from a respectable mid-table finish last season to being strong contenders for relegation from the Championship has raised alarm bells. The club is now grappling with severe financial constraints, including a transfer embargo imposed by the English Football League (EFL) and mounting debts.
Recent developments have compounded the club’s woes, with reports indicating that Sheffield Wednesday has failed to pay player wages on time in five of the past seven months. The situation worsened when it was revealed that the club is “days away” from a potential administration filing and a winding-up petition from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over an outstanding tax bill of £1 million. Chansiri is reportedly seeking £100 million to sell the club, with former Newcastle United chairman Mike Ashley emerging as a potential buyer.
Mike Ashley’s History with Newcastle United
Ashley, who gained prominence through his ownership of Sports Direct, purchased Newcastle United in the summer of 2007 for a reported £134 million. At that time, the club was managed by Kevin Keegan, and Ashley was initially welcomed by fans. However, it soon came to light that he had not conducted adequate due diligence before the acquisition, leading to significant protests following Keegan’s departure in 2008. Under Ashley’s stewardship, Newcastle faced relegation to the Championship for the first time in 1993, only to return to the Premier League shortly after.
His tenure was marked by controversies, including rebranding St James’ Park as the Sports Direct Arena in 2011, a decision that was quickly reversed. Ashley’s investment in the club peaked in 2019 with the signing of Joelinton for £40 million. His ownership ended in October 2021 when the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund acquired the club for £300 million.
Potential for Change at Sheffield Wednesday
The current climate at Sheffield Wednesday reflects a desperate need for change. Fans are increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction with Chansiri’s management, and many would welcome any new ownership group willing to revitalize the club. If Ashley were to take over, supporters would likely hope he has learned from past missteps during his time at Newcastle.
While Ashley’s previous tenure was fraught with challenges, it is uncertain how he would approach a new ownership at Sheffield Wednesday. Many fans might prefer a gradual rebuilding process, provided it comes with adequate financial support to improve the club’s fortunes. The prospect of Ashley leading the club could bring mixed reactions, given his controversial history, but for many, any change in ownership might be seen as a step in the right direction.
As the situation unfolds, the future of Sheffield Wednesday hangs in the balance, with the potential for a major overhaul looming on the horizon. The next few weeks will be critical in determining whether the club can avert financial disaster and chart a new course under prospective leadership.
