UK Tourists Urged to Follow New Dress Code During Thai Mourning

UK travelers heading to Thailand are advised to adhere to specific guidelines during a formal mourning period following the passing of HM Queen Sirikit, the mother of King Vajiralongkorn. The Queen died at the age of 93 on October 17, 2025, after battling a blood infection. Her death has prompted the Royal Household Bureau to announce a year of mourning, affecting various aspects of public life and tourism.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for visitors to Thailand, stating, “Thailand is in a formal mourning period from October 25, 2025, for at least 30 days.” Tourists are likely to experience disruptions in a range of services, including entertainment venues, restaurants, and shopping areas, as the country observes this period of respect.

During the mourning phase, authorities recommend tourists wear sombre clothing, particularly in public. Bright or festive attire is to be avoided to demonstrate respect for the royal family. Additionally, visitors are encouraged to behave appropriately in public spaces, especially near temples, royal sites, and government premises.

In a related concern, the FCDO has reiterated warnings for holidaymakers planning to visit Thailand’s border with Cambodia. Following skirmishes earlier this year, including the use of artillery and rocket fire, tensions remain high in this area. The border remains closed, and specific tourist locations, such as the Khao Phra Wihan and Preah Vihear temples, are currently inaccessible.

The FCDO’s guidance emphasizes the importance of safety in these regions, advising against all but essential travel to affected border areas. Unexploded landmines pose additional risks for travelers.

As tourism in Thailand attracts nearly one million UK visitors annually, these developments necessitate awareness and compliance with local customs and safety protocols. Tourists are encouraged to stay informed about the latest travel advisories and ensure their journeys respect the cultural significance of this mourning period.
