Tain Royal Academy Community Complex Secures £1.2 Million Investment
A vital community facility in Tain, Scotland, known as the Tain Royal Academy Community Complex (TRACC), has secured a £1.2 million investment from Highland Council. This funding will extend the facility’s operations for an additional five years, safeguarding it against closure and ensuring continued access to the region’s only swimming pool.
The decision, made during a council vote, aligns with the ambitious Highland Investment Plan aimed at enhancing local infrastructure. The motion approved by council members states: “Agree that capital funding of £1.2 million is allocated to enable the Tain Royal Academy Community Complex (TRACC) to be retained as a separate, standalone building for a period of up to five years once the new Tain Campus building is operational.” The new campus, catering to children aged three to eighteen, is scheduled to open in February 2026.
Community Impact and Support
Following the council’s decision, Tain and Easter Ross councillor Laura Dundas expressed strong support for the investment, highlighting the essential role TRACC plays in the community. She stated, “There’s no doubt the Highland Investment Plan is offering a much-needed opportunity to invest in the roads, schools and infrastructure that our communities expect and deserve.”
Dundas emphasized the significance of TRACC, noting, “We could not accept for the lights to go out and the doors to close when our new campus opens without the opportunity of putting a new sports facility in place.” She pointed out the health benefits of public sports facilities, which aid in combating issues such as heart disease and obesity, especially during challenging times for the National Health Service (NHS).
In her remarks to the full council meeting, Dundas underscored the social importance of TRACC. “Our young people need a safe and structured environment and TRACC provides this. It keeps them off the streets, away from antisocial behaviour and engaged in something positive,” she said.
Inclusive Environment and Future Planning
TRACC serves as a gathering place for a diverse range of community members, including toddlers, children, young adults, and seniors. According to Dundas, “It’s a place where people feel they belong, and in an age of isolation and loneliness, that sense of belonging is priceless.”
Education chairman John Finlayson voiced his support for the investment, stating, “We need to be providing new and upgraded sporting facilities right across the Highlands.” He recognized the significance of the consultation process that took place in Tain, which indicated strong community interest in retaining TRACC.
Finlayson added, “The results of a consultation process that took place in Tain around TRACC have to be honoured,” acknowledging the proactive efforts of councillors Dundas and Maureen Ross in working closely with their community. Their dedication has led to a promising future for this vital community resource.
The £1.2 million investment not only secures TRACC’s operations but also allows stakeholders the necessary time to plan for its future, ensuring that this cornerstone of the community continues to provide essential services and support for years to come.
