Thames Valley Police Share Bizarre 999 Calls for Control Room Week
Thames Valley Police recently highlighted some of the most unusual emergency calls received over the years, coinciding with the celebration of International Control Room Week. The police force acknowledged the dedicated work of their call handlers, who often manage bizarre, humorous, and, at times, tragic situations while maintaining professionalism.
Among the more peculiar reports was a call from a resident claiming to have spotted a jaguar in their garden. Upon investigation, it turned out to be a badger. Other strange complaints included a person reporting a stolen orange, another singing a song before abruptly hanging up, and various inquiries about the sun being the “big light in the sky.” Callers also sought assistance for issues like barking dogs, loose sheep and cows on the road, and even frustrations about parking.
As part of their outreach, Thames Valley Police shared a video showcasing call handlers reflecting on their experiences. These individuals play a crucial role, responding to both lighthearted and severe incidents. In their line of work, they often encounter distressing situations, including reports of suicide attempts, domestic abuse, and fatal accidents.
One call handler noted on the Thames Valley Police Facebook page, “Nearly 10 years doing it, some hilarious calls, some horrific calls, laughter and tears. There are still calls I remember vividly, sadly they are the worst ones.” Another staff member echoed similar sentiments, mentioning that the memories of traumatic calls remain with them, alongside the amusing ones.
The video campaign aims to foster public appreciation for these “unsung heroes.” By sharing their experiences, Thames Valley Police hope to raise awareness about the critical importance of the control room teams, who are often the first responders to emergencies, even if their work goes unnoticed.
In addition to the lighter moments, the call handlers also shared stories that moved them deeply, emphasizing the dual nature of their responsibilities. They handle calls with patience and sensitivity, providing support to individuals in crisis while also managing more trivial inquiries.
The message is clear: Thames Valley Police invite the public to join in thanking these vital staff members. Their work saves lives, supports communities, and plays a fundamental role in maintaining public safety.
