Millions Set to Receive Winter Fuel Payments: What to Know
In the coming weeks, millions of households in England and Wales will receive notifications from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) regarding their eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment. This one-off financial aid, which ranges between £100 and £300, aims to assist those facing higher energy costs during the colder months. Over nine million people born before September 22, 1959 are expected to benefit from this initiative.
Eligibility and Payment Details
The DWP will dispatch letters throughout October and November to inform pensioners about their Winter Fuel Payment entitlements. Most eligible individuals will automatically receive their payments in November or December. Yet, some recipients might not receive a notification even if they qualify. If a household does not receive a letter or payment by January 28, 2026, it is crucial to reach out to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
To inquire about their payment, individuals should provide specific personal details such as name, address, date of birth, and National Insurance Number. This information allows the Centre to assist efficiently. Contact methods include calling 0800 731 0160, sending an email inquiry through the official website, or mailing a letter to:

Understanding the Qualification Criteria
Eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment is primarily for individuals born before September 22, 1959 residing in England or Wales. The amount awarded is determined by the individual’s birth date and their circumstances during the ‘qualifying week’ between September 15 and 21, 2025.
While most pensioners will receive the payment automatically, those who believe they are eligible but do not receive it should explore their options for submitting a claim. The deadline for applying for the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2025 to 2026 season is March 31, 2026.
Additionally, the DWP has clarified that pensioners with an income exceeding £35,000 will have the total amount of their Winter Fuel Payment collected through PAYE or their Self-Assessment return. No further registration with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is necessary. For those wishing to decline the payment, details on how to opt out will be provided later.
Comprehensive information regarding eligibility and application procedures for the Winter Fuel Payment is accessible on the GOV.UK website.
