Delhi Unveils 4km Tunnel Project to Slash Travel Time by 40%

Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans for a new 4-kilometre tunnel between Inderlok and Kashmere Gate. This project aims to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Haryana by 40 percent and alleviate congestion at key traffic hotspots, including Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur, and Roshanara Road.

To enhance connectivity between the capital and its neighbouring state, the PWD intends to extend the existing Munak Canal elevated road to Kashmere Gate. According to initial evaluations, this corridor will streamline the route for commuters, providing a faster and more efficient connection to central Delhi.

Project Details and Benefits

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh confirmed that preparations for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) are underway for the tunnel project. He emphasized that this initiative is part of the Delhi government’s broader strategy to improve road infrastructure and address persistent traffic issues that residents have faced for years.

“This corridor will bring great relief to people travelling from North and Northwest Delhi, as well as those coming from Haryana,” Singh stated. “Once complete, it will offer a direct, high-speed route to Central Delhi and help reduce travel time and pollution levels.”

The planned tunnel will connect the elevated road currently under construction at Inderlok to Kashmere Gate, creating a signal-free corridor. This connection will link the Delhi-Haryana border directly to key thoroughfares, including the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Outer Ring Road, and the Wazirabad corridor.

Minister Singh highlighted that this project reflects the government’s commitment to long-term and sustainable infrastructure development. He stated, “Delhi needs modern and smart transport solutions that serve the city’s growing needs for years to come.”

The new corridor is set to facilitate smoother traffic flow at critical junctions, greatly benefiting commuters traveling from areas such as Sonipat and Rohtak. By enhancing connectivity and reducing congestion, officials believe this project will improve the overall commuting experience for thousands of residents.
