Police Detain Driver After Collision with M6 Barrier Following Long Shift
A driver of a white van was pulled over by police after crashing into a barrier on the M6 Motorway. The incident occurred as the driver was travelling northbound near junction 14 for Stafford North before veering onto the nearby A500. Officers from the Staffordshire Road Crime Team intervened, leading to the motorist being reported for allegedly driving without due care and attention.
The situation unfolded over the weekend when police received reports from National Highways indicating that the driver had struck a nearside barrier on the M6. A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police stated, “We boxed in this Sprinter on the A500. The driver had been observed by National Highways striking a nearside barrier on the M6 northbound, and we suspected they were drunk.”
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the driver had been fatigued, having completed a demanding 20-hour work shift. This revelation raises concerns about the safety implications of long working hours for commercial drivers. Police emphasized the need for vigilance on the roads, especially regarding driver fatigue and the risks associated with excessive work hours.
The driver’s actions have drawn attention to the broader issue of road safety, particularly in relation to heavy vehicle operators who may be under pressure to meet tight deadlines. Police urge all drivers to prioritize their well-being and that of others on the road, highlighting the importance of adequate rest before operating a vehicle.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and encourage any witnesses to come forward with information. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for responsible driving practices and the potential dangers posed by fatigue behind the wheel.
