Russia and Saudi Arabia Launch Visa-Free Travel Agreement
Russian and Saudi officials have signed a significant agreement allowing visa-free travel for citizens of both nations for up to 90 days each year. The accord was finalized during a bilateral business forum held in Riyadh on October 9, 2023. This move represents a notable step in enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement, which was officially published by Moscow prior to the signing, permits citizens of Russia and Saudi Arabia to visit each other without the need for a visa for a specified duration. The new travel framework is set to take effect 60 days after it is ratified by both nations. It is important to note that this visa waiver does not apply to individuals traveling for employment, study, or permanent residency. Additionally, Russian citizens intending to travel to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage will still be required to secure separate permits.
During the forum, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak, who co-leads the intergovernmental committee on trade and economic partnership, highlighted the growing economic ties between Russia and Saudi Arabia. He noted that the volume of Russian investment in the Arab kingdom has surged sixfold over the past year, while Saudi investment in Russia has increased by 11%.
Resumption of Direct Flights Enhances Connectivity
As part of the renewed cooperation, direct air services between the two nations have also resumed, which were previously halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Novak mentioned that he anticipates Russian airlines will soon join their Saudi counterparts in operating flights between the two countries.
The low-cost Saudi airline Flynas reestablished a regular service from Riyadh to Moscow on August 1, 2023, while the national carrier Saudia initiated nonstop flights on October 10, 2023. This revitalization of air travel is expected to further bolster tourism and business exchanges.
Novak also indicated that the two countries share similar positions on various international and regional issues, reinforcing their diplomatic relations. He stated that bilateral trade between Russia and Saudi Arabia has doubled over the past five years. Russia continues to be a key supplier of grain products and poultry meat to the Saudi market, demonstrating the interdependence of the two economies.
This agreement marks a new chapter in the relationship between Russia and Saudi Arabia, paving the way for closer ties and increased movement of people and goods between the two nations. As the world watches, the impact of these developments will likely resonate beyond their borders.
