Plans have emerged to convert the closed White Lion pub in Bulkington into a residential space, addressing the urgent demand for housing in the area. The pub, which has remained vacant since its closure in 2020, previously received approval for a transformation into a House of Multiple Occupation (HMO) featuring eight and seven bedrooms. However, a new proposal seeks to repurpose the building into a 13-bedroom assisted living facility.

The new application aims to meet the need for long-term residential accommodation for individuals requiring additional support for daily living. According to the proposal, this approach is considered more vital for the local community. The project will provide separate living, dining, and kitchen facilities, along with a dedicated staff office at the front of the building to ensure 24/7 management and security.

In addition to the internal modifications, the design includes access to outdoor space for all residents. The applicant emphasizes that transforming the pub into a residential scheme will help mitigate potential issues of nuisance and vandalism, ultimately enhancing the neighborhood’s quality of life.

Revamping the Local Landscape

The proposal highlights that the site is in need of attention and that a residential scheme would visually revamp the area. “The high quality product of this proposal will result in revamping the area visually, improving the street scene,” the applicant stated. The plan also references other successful developments along Leicester Road, suggesting that the White Lion pub site presents an excellent opportunity for redevelopment.

As local authorities evaluate the application, the details are publicly accessible on the council’s website under planning reference 041280. This initiative reflects a broader trend towards creating housing solutions that cater to specific community needs, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The Town Hall is currently reviewing the application, with a decision expected soon. By transforming a derelict structure into a much-needed facility, the project aims to provide quality living conditions while contributing positively to the Bulkington community.
