Sunderland Stuns Liverpool with Late Own Goal in Thrilling Draw
Liverpool salvaged a point against Sunderland in a gripping encounter at Anfield on Wednesday night, relying on a late own goal to equalize after being on the brink of defeat. Sunderland’s Chemsdine Talbi scored in the 67th minute, putting his team ahead and threatening to increase pressure on Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot. However, the defending Premier League champions managed to level the score when a shot from Florian Wirtz deflected off Nordi Mukiele and into the net.
Sunderland’s performance deserved recognition, as they controlled significant portions of the match. Regis Le Bris, the Sunderland manager, was joined by former player Kevin Phillips in the away end, celebrating Talbi’s goal with the travelling supporters. Phillips, a Sunderland icon, scored 130 goals in 235 appearances for the club and was clearly thrilled to witness the effort of the team.
Despite missing the opportunity to secure their first league win at Anfield since 1983, Le Bris expressed satisfaction with the draw. “I am not disappointed because it is a point away at Anfield,” he stated. “It is a privilege to play our football here.” Le Bris emphasized the importance of belief and resilience after the first half, encouraging his players to push for more.
He acknowledged that Liverpool’s substitutions and the support of their home crowd brought them back into the game. “We defended well and had a chance to score the second goal after their equaliser, but it wasn’t to be,” Le Bris said. He noted the team’s ability to learn and adapt as a significant strength, especially in a challenging league environment.
Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, reflected on the match, remarking, “A game where we didn’t concede a lot or create a lot and were really unlucky with the goal we conceded.” He described the equalizing goal as fortunate, acknowledging the lack of opportunities for both teams throughout the match. “We were very unlucky in the second half. In one moment we conceded, but we came back strong,” Slot added.
The match ended with both teams sharing the spoils, leaving Sunderland to celebrate a hard-earned point and Liverpool to reflect on missed chances. The draw serves as a testament to Sunderland’s growth and resilience under Le Bris, while Liverpool will need to regroup as they continue their season.
