Alan Titchmarsh Embraces Change, Lists Hampshire Home for £3.95 Million

Alan Titchmarsh has announced a significant life change by putting his four-acre property on the market for £3.95 million, marking the end of a 23-year chapter in his life. The renowned television presenter and gardening expert, who is now 76 years old, admitted he is “knocking on a bit” while discussing his decision to downsize from the Grade II-listed Manor Farm House in Holybourne, Hampshire.

In an interview with BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, Titchmarsh revealed his motivation for this move. He described it as an opportunity to embrace a “new challenge,” although he acknowledged that many people in his age group are often advised to consider downsizing. Initially, he and his wife, Alison, had no plans to leave their Georgian home, but he recognised that letting go of a property where they have invested their “heart and soul” would be a difficult transition.

“But when you are knocking on a bit (which I refuse to believe, despite what the numbers tell me), you do muse on the future – a future which I hope will be long and fulfilling,” Titchmarsh said. He addressed the common question he receives: “‘Are you retiring?’ I am asked. ‘Er, no!’ Consolidating more like.”

Looking after the extensive grounds and the historic house has been a rewarding experience, but he expressed a desire to move before the responsibilities become overwhelming. His daughters played an instrumental role in finding their new home, which he described as “low” and “modern,” and significantly smaller at an acre and a half. The couple is reportedly “smitten” with their new property, which presents fresh gardening opportunities for Titchmarsh. The new location features acidic soil, allowing him to finally cultivate rhododendrons, a plant he has not grown since he was 20 years old.

In addition to discussing his relocation, Titchmarsh shared his thoughts on a particular plant he dislikes during a recent episode of his YouTube channel, Gardening With Alan Titchmarsh. He expressed his distaste for ornamental kale, referring to it as a “bit of a weirdo.” Although he acknowledged that some people appreciate the plant, he humorously cautioned viewers not to bring it “anywhere near my garden.”

In a lighthearted moment, he quipped, “Where have you seen a brighter rosette, the most beautiful specimen of plant life…oh I’m joking. I couldn’t wish that on you.” Titchmarsh concluded by stating, “I know some people like them, and I hate to be unkind to any plant, but it’s a bit of a weirdo isn’t it really? Plant it if you like it, but don’t bring it anywhere near my garden.”

As Titchmarsh embarks on this new phase in his life, his dedication to gardening remains evident, along with his signature charm and candidness that have endeared him to audiences for decades.
