Community Volunteers Rally to Save Polmont Sports Centre

A community effort is underway to save the Polmont Sports Centre from impending closure. Falkirk Council plans to shut down the centre on October 1, 2023, unless local volunteers step forward to take over its operations. A dedicated group of residents has formed a registered charity with the aim of keeping the facility open, and they are actively seeking additional volunteers to support their cause.

The initiative to save Polmont Sports Centre has made significant strides, including the development of a business plan essential for a Community Asset Transfer bid. Despite this progress, the group emphasizes the urgent need for more community involvement. Jan Crossthwaite, interim treasurer of the volunteer group, stated, “Things are certainly gathering pace towards our deadline of October 1. We still, however, need more volunteers to help us run the centre.”

Currently, the group does not have the financial resources to hire staff, as they must prioritize covering the substantial operational costs of the centre. Volunteers are being encouraged to contribute between one and four hours a week, with flexible scheduling options available. Crossthwaite added, “If you could give up between one and four hours a week—at days and times of your choosing—please get in touch.”

In addition to seeking volunteers, the group is looking for more community members to utilize the sports centre, especially during weekdays. They are also inviting local residents to book the facility for birthday parties and social events on weekends.

Upcoming Meetings and Fundraising Efforts

The volunteers will hold their next meeting at the Grange Centre in Brightons at 19:00 on August 5. This meeting is open to anyone interested in supporting the initiative. Unlike many community asset transfer efforts, this group does not have initial funding and is therefore conducting regular car boot sales to raise funds necessary for their bid.

The next car boot sale is scheduled for August 3, running from 12:00 to 16:00. The cost for each pitch is £10, with all proceeds directed towards the volunteer group. Interested vendors must book their pitches in advance by calling 07306 134652.
