Manchester United Targets Benjamin Sesko in £60 Million Bid

Manchester United is reportedly pursuing a £60 million transfer for striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. This follows a series of high-profile signings aimed at bolstering their attacking options. Sesko, who has drawn comparisons to Erling Haaland, is seen as a player with immense potential, making him an attractive target for the club this summer.

Sesko joined RB Salzburg in 2021 with the challenge of stepping into Haaland’s shoes, who had made a remarkable impact in the Austrian league. Haaland scored 28 goals in just 22 matches before moving to Borussia Dortmund. Although Sesko’s goal-scoring record has not matched Haaland’s early success, he has still impressed many observers in his own right.

In 2023, Sesko expressed that the comparisons with Haaland serve as motivation rather than pressure. “Such comparisons motivate me and give me energy,” he stated. He acknowledged that his teammates have noted similarities between his playing style and that of Haaland, with some even claiming he is superior.

Despite not replicating Haaland’s meteoric rise, the opportunity for Sesko to join the Premier League comes at a crucial juncture—much like Haaland’s career trajectory. Earlier in the transfer window, Arsenal appeared set to sign the 22-year-old but shifted their focus to Viktor Gyokeres. Meanwhile, both Liverpool and Chelsea have shown interest but have since redirected their resources towards other forwards. This leaves Manchester United in a comparatively advantageous position to negotiate a deal.

Yet, uncertainty remains regarding the potential transfer. The Red Devils have already invested £133 million in attacking players this summer, including Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Financial concerns are evident, and any additional expenditure must be approached with caution.

Adding to the complexity is the challenge of persuading Sesko to join a club lacking Champions League football, putting them at a disadvantage against other domestic and European contenders. Furthermore, Sesko is under contract with Leipzig until 2029, providing him with leverage and time to consider his options.

Sesko previously rejected a move to Manchester United in 2023, choosing Leipzig instead. “It was very important for me to go to a place that plays a similar style of football,” he explained in 2024. The striker emphasized that he preferred to avoid a steep learning curve and wanted to transition smoothly into a familiar playing style.

With a new manager at the helm and a reconfigured forward line, Manchester United aims to present an enticing vision for Sesko. The club’s management is hopeful that this fresh perspective, coupled with their storied history, will resonate with the young striker.

If Manchester United can successfully convince Sesko that Old Trafford is not just a venue for following in Haaland’s footsteps, but rather a platform for him to carve out his own legacy, it could result in a significant turning point for the club. The potential addition of Sesko could redefine Manchester United’s attacking strategy and signal a new chapter for the team, characterized by individual brilliance rather than historical comparisons.
