De Ligt Calls for Manchester United Rebuild After Disappointing Season

Matthijs de Ligt has emphasized the need for Manchester United to rebuild their confidence following a disappointing season, the club’s worst in over 50 years. After an opening match in their preseason tour at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Dutch defender acknowledged the challenges faced during the previous season, which saw the team finish in 15th place in the league.
The 2022-2023 season was marked by a staggering 18 league defeats, a record that left United with a deep sense of dissatisfaction. “I think after a season like that, it’s normal to have to build your confidence,” De Ligt stated. He highlighted the significance of their recent win against West Ham, saying it is crucial for fostering a positive mindset among the players. “With winning, you become more confident. You start to believe more in what you’re doing,” he added.
New Leadership and Fresh Opportunities
Under the guidance of Ruben Amorim, who took over as head coach mid-season after the departure of Erik ten Hag, the team has entered a new phase with the summer tour representing a fresh start. Amorim’s arrival came during a tumultuous time, as he juggled a demanding schedule since his appointment in November. The trip to the United States offers a valuable opportunity for extensive training and team bonding.
“Last season is last season; new season, new season,” De Ligt declared, expressing optimism about the team’s current atmosphere. He noted the presence of new players and the opportunity for intensive training. “We are all unhappy with our performances last season. We owe it to ourselves to play much better,” he said, emphasizing the need to bring joy back to the club’s supporters.
Turning Setbacks into Strengths
De Ligt also reflected on the disappointment of missing out on European football after losing the Europa League final. This setback, however, could provide a silver lining, he argued. “If you use the time well, it can definitely be an advantage,” he remarked. While acknowledging the disappointment of not competing in Europe, he noted that some teams facing similar challenges in the Premier League struggled despite their European commitments.
Looking ahead, De Ligt believes that focused training can transform their current situation into a strength. “If we train every day at maximum, we can make it our advantage,” he concluded, reinforcing the team’s commitment to improvement and resilience as they prepare for the upcoming season.
