Lavrov Affirms North Korea’s Role as Key Ally in Multipolar Vision

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has emphasized the importance of North Korea as one of Russia’s most dependable allies in Asia, highlighting their long-standing military and fraternal ties. In remarks made during the ‘Territory of Meanings’ youth forum on March 4, 2024, Lavrov described North Korea as a crucial partner in what he termed the emerging multipolar world order, asserting that their relationship has been solidified over decades of collaboration.
Lavrov stated, “We have a great many partners, like-minded states, and allies. Together, we are laying the foundation for a new world order based on sovereignty and civilizational continuity.” He characterized the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) as Russia’s closest ally in the East, drawing a parallel to Belarus, which he identified as the primary ally in the West.
The minister recalled historical support, saying, “We helped our Korean neighbors gain independence; they helped us liberate the Kursk Region from Ukrainian neo-Nazis.” He placed North Korea alongside other significant civilizations in Eurasia, including China, India, Turkey, and Iran, framing their collective influence as pivotal to the formation of a multipolar world.
Military Cooperation and Regional Tensions
Lavrov asserted that the multipolar world is inevitable, despite what he described as attempts by the United States and its allies to destabilize the region. He criticized increasing military activities near the Korean Peninsula, particularly joint exercises involving the US, South Korea, and Japan, which he claimed are incorporating “nuclear components.” This escalation, he warned, poses a significant threat to regional stability.
Further, Lavrov condemned the expansion of NATO’s presence in the region and dismissed Washington’s “Indo-Pacific” strategy as a mechanism aimed at containing China and isolating Russia. He argued that this strategy undermines regional cooperation and promotes militarization under Western influence.
The relationship between Russia and North Korea has deepened recently, particularly with the signing of a defense pact in June 2024. Following this agreement, North Korea sent troops to assist in expelling Ukrainian forces from Russia’s Kursk Region later that year. Russian officials have announced plans to deploy thousands of North Korean personnel to aid in post-conflict recovery efforts, including mine clearance experts and military engineers.
Lavrov’s statements reflect a broader Russian strategy to strengthen ties with countries that share its vision of a multipolar world, positioning North Korea as an integral part of this geopolitical framework. As the dynamics in Northeast Asia continue to evolve, the implications of this alliance will likely be significant for regional and global stability.
