JK Rowling Calls for Marks & Spencer Boycott Over Trans Employee Incident

JK Rowling has initiated a boycott against Marks & Spencer (M&S) following a recent incident involving a customer complaint about a staff member identified as transgender. The controversy erupted when a mother claimed that the employee approached her and her 14-year-old daughter in the bra section of an M&S store, asking if they needed assistance.

The complaint, reported by The Telegraph, describes the staff member’s interaction as “completely inappropriate” and stated that it left the teenager feeling “freaked out.” M&S responded to the complaint, clarifying that the employee is not responsible for bra fittings and was merely offering assistance as part of their duties. The retailer issued an apology to the mother, acknowledging the distress caused.

In her call for a boycott, Rowling referenced the UK Supreme Court’s ruling from April 2023, which addressed issues related to women-only spaces. She expressed her concern over M&S’s approach to accommodating transgender individuals, stating, “It’s time for women to vote with their wallets.” Rowling emphasized that businesses should prioritize the safety and comfort of women and girls.

Fiona McAnena, director of campaigns at the gender-critical organization Sex Matters, also spoke out against M&S, urging the company to reconsider its policies regarding staff interactions with young women. McAnena asserted that it is inappropriate for a male-identifying individual to approach a teenage girl in a lingerie department, regardless of their appearance or attire.

The customer who filed the complaint described the employee as a “transgender ‘woman’, ie, a biological male,” and noted the staff member’s height as a point of concern. In her account, she stated that her daughter recoiled at the interaction, prompting them to leave the store immediately.

After the complaint, M&S customer service responded with an apology, assuring the mother that future visits would ensure assistance from female colleagues. Despite this, the mother felt the response was inadequate and called for M&S to implement policies that would prevent transgender staff from engaging with young female customers.

In a statement to PinkNews, a spokesperson for M&S highlighted the company’s commitment to inclusivity, explaining that staff typically rotate across departments and that customers can request assistance from colleagues they feel most comfortable with.

This incident is not the first time M&S has faced backlash from anti-trans activists. In November 2023, gender-critical campaigners criticized M&S for its advertising, accusing the brand of promoting “gender ideology” through the use of gender-neutral language in a bra campaign aimed at young girls.

The phrase “young things,” used in promotional materials, was deemed dehumanizing by critics, despite its historical use dating back to the 1920s. M&S has previously encountered similar accusations, such as during its festive campaign in late 2023, which was labeled “woke” due to its focus on inclusivity and balance during the holiday season.

As the debate continues, both M&S and Rowling remain at the center of a contentious discussion regarding the intersection of gender identity and women’s rights. The ongoing discourse reflects broader societal tensions over how businesses navigate inclusivity while addressing the concerns of their customer base.
