Shetland Ponies Gear Up for Exciting Weekend of Competition
A weekend filled with Shetland pony activities is set to take place on September 30 and October 1, 2023, at the Cunningsburgh Showground. The event, hosted by the Pony Breeders of Shetland Association, marks the 34th annual Viking Shetland Pony Show. Organisers expressed their enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Not long to go now. We are really looking forward to this weekend and hope all the exhibitors’ preparations are going well.”
The festivities kick off on Saturday with the Helen Thomson Memorial Fun Day. This day includes a variety of engaging classes such as jumping competitions, an agility course, and gymkhana games. These events are designed to be accessible, allowing anyone to participate on the day.
Sunday features a more formal atmosphere with in-hand and ridden showing. Participants will compete in three separate rings, each judged by a distinguished official. Susan Dunnet will oversee the judging for standard ponies, while Jem Roberts evaluates the small ponies. Rounding out the judging panel is Tony Bell, who will assess the performance ponies. At the conclusion of the day, champions from each ring will vie for the title of “supreme champion.” This coveted award includes a silver medal presented by the Shetland Pony Studbook Society.
Spectators are encouraged to attend and witness the excitement of the various events. For additional information, individuals can search for the Viking Shetland Pony Show on Facebook. This weekend promises to be an engaging celebration of Shetland ponies, showcasing their agility, beauty, and spirit.
