Former IDF Chief Calls for Palestinian Deaths in Leaked Audio
Audio recordings featuring Aharon Haliva, the former head of military intelligence for the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), have sparked outrage after he stated that the deaths of 50,000 Palestinians in Gaza were “necessary” to serve future generations. The comments surfaced in a report by Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 and have drawn significant attention given the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In the recordings, Haliva expressed that for every individual killed during the attacks on October 7, 2023, which left approximately 1,200 Israelis dead and over 250 taken hostage by Hamas, “50 Palestinians must die.” He noted that the number of fatalities in Gaza, which the health ministry reports as exceeding 62,000, was justified in the context of future generations.
“The fact that there are already 50,000 dead in Gaza is necessary and required for future generations,” Haliva stated. He further asserted, “It doesn’t matter now if they are children,” emphasizing that his remarks were not motivated by revenge but rather intended as a lesson for future generations. He claimed that such heavy losses were essential to instill a sense of consequence and sacrifice.
The term ‘Nakba,’ which translates to “catastrophe” in Arabic, was also mentioned in the recordings. It refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 Palestine war, a historical event that has profound implications in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Haliva, who was in his position during the October 7 attacks, resigned in April 2024, citing his “leadership responsibility” as the first senior officer of the IDF to do so. The exact context of the leaked recordings remains unclear, and Channel 12 did not disclose the identities of other individuals involved in the discussions. Throughout the recordings, Haliva criticized various leadership roles within Israel, including the political leadership and the Shin Bet security service, for underestimating the threat posed by Hamas.
In response to the leaked audio, Haliva expressed regret, stating, “The leaked recordings were published from things said in a closed forum, and I can only regret that.” He described the snippets as “fragments of partial things, which cannot reflect the full picture” of the complex and classified issues discussed.
He acknowledged the gravity of the October 7 events, saying, “The October 7 disaster occurred on my watch as head of the Intelligence Division,” and added, “I bear ultimate responsibility for what happened.”
The fallout from these statements raises significant ethical questions about military conduct and accountability in conflict situations. The IDF has yet to issue a formal comment regarding Haliva’s remarks, which continue to reverberate in discussions about the implications of military strategy and human rights in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, grappling with the humanitarian implications and the broader geopolitical ramifications of Haliva’s controversial statements.
