Trump Revokes Harris’s Secret Service Protection Ahead of Book Tour
Former President Donald Trump has revoked the Secret Service protection of former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to reports from CNN. This decision follows the expiration of her standard protection period, which lasted for six months after leaving office. Under United States law, former vice presidents receive protection for only this duration; however, a directive signed by President Joe Biden had previously extended Harris’s security for an additional year.
The termination of this protection was reportedly executed on August 28, 2023. As a result, Harris will lose the round-the-clock security and intelligence briefings that accompany Secret Service protection, particularly regarding potential threats. Federal agents will no longer guard her residence, which raises concerns about her safety and the financial burden of securing private security arrangements, which could cost millions annually.
Harris’s senior adviser, Kirsten Allen, expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service for their service. She stated, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
This development occurs as Harris prepares for the release of her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, scheduled for September 23, 2023. The book details her experiences during her presidential campaign, making the timing of the revocation particularly notable as she embarks on a high-profile promotional tour.
The implications of this decision extend beyond personal safety. It highlights the evolving dynamics in American politics and the lengths to which former presidents might go to assert authority over their successors. The political landscape remains charged as both parties prepare for the upcoming election cycle. As Harris navigates her new reality without Secret Service protection, it raises questions about security for high-profile political figures in the United States and the political motivations behind such decisions.
The situation continues to develop, and further updates will provide more context regarding its impact on Harris’s safety and political career.
