Jamie Borthwick, known for portraying Jay Brown on the long-running soap opera EastEnders, has been officially informed that he will not return to the show after nearly two decades. At the age of 31, Borthwick is one of the programme’s longest-serving cast members, having joined in 2006. His departure follows a suspension in June 2023 due to inappropriate language used during filming in Blackpool.

According to a statement from BBC Studios, which produces the show, “We can confirm that Jamie Borthwick will not be returning to EastEnders. We do not comment on individual matters.” Reports indicate that Borthwick was recently informed of the decision and has appeared visibly upset since receiving the news.

In June, the actor faced backlash after a video surfaced where he used an offensive term to describe residents of Blackpool. The BBC condemned his remarks as “entirely unacceptable” and emphasized that such language does not align with the values or standards they uphold. Following the incident, the disability organization Scope urged Borthwick to reflect on his words and to educate himself about the realities faced by disabled individuals.

Borthwick had been expected to return to filming this month, but the BBC’s earlier statements highlighted that they handle each case based on its own circumstances, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining appropriate conduct. Despite the possibility of resuming his role, the network has now confirmed his exit from the show.

The actor expressed his remorse shortly after the incident, stating, “I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused.” He acknowledged that he did not fully understand the derogatory term he used and felt embarrassed by his actions. “When I made the video, I was excited and caught up in the moment. Again, that is no excuse,” he added, reiterating that his actions do not reflect his true character.

Borthwick gained recognition early in his career, winning a British Soap Award for Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor at just 13 years old, along with an Inside Soap Award for Best Actor. His recent appearances included participation in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special in December 2023, where he was able to showcase his dancing skills despite being voted off during the main series in November 2023.

As fans of EastEnders adjust to the news, the show will continue to air Monday to Thursday at 19:30 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Borthwick’s representative has been contacted for further comments regarding his departure.
