Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has acknowledged that he did not purchase a home in Clacton as he previously claimed. This admission came during a heated interview with Sky News, where Farage stated he had “misspoke” about the property transaction, which he initially described as having “exchanged contracts” last year.

In November 2022, Farage had asserted, “I’ve bought a house in Clacton. What more do you want me to do?” However, in his recent remarks, he clarified that the house was actually acquired by his partner without any financial involvement from him. This distinction means Farage, who owns other properties, is not liable for the additional stamp duty typically imposed on individuals owning multiple homes.

Clarification and Reaction

During Reform UK’s annual conference in Birmingham, Farage attempted to clarify his previous statements about the property. “I should have said ‘we,’ alright? My partner bought it, so what?” he remarked. He added, “It’s her money. It’s her asset. I own none of it. But I just happen to spend some time there.”

Farage explained that he chose not to disclose his partner’s ownership to protect her privacy. When interviewer Beth Rigby pointed out that this arrangement shifted the stamp duty liability to his partner, Farage responded sharply, stating, “How dare you. It’s her business, her money, her asset. And, do you know what? Actually, given that it’s in the constituency for security reasons, it’s better that way.”

The implications of his admission have drawn criticism from political opponents. Anna Turley, the newly appointed chair of the Labour Party, called out Farage for allegedly misleading both his constituents and the public. She stated, “Nigel Farage has repeatedly misled his constituents and the British public about buying a home in his constituency.”

Turley emphasized that if Farage’s claims had been accurate, he would have faced substantial additional taxes, potentially amounting to tens of thousands of pounds. She accused him of engaging in “double standards” and being “two-faced,” suggesting that his statements were politically motivated while financially advantageous.
