Europe Must Modernize Air Traffic Systems to Reduce Delays

The SES initiative could potentially triple airspace capacity and significantly reduce delays, yet, despite its passage into European law in December 2022, EU member states have yet to implement it. Brady highlighted a troubling trend, stating that delays related to air traffic control in Europe increased from 11.6 percent in the first half of 2023 to 18.9 percent in July alone. This rate of disruption is seven times higher than in the United States, which is Swissport’s second-largest market.

Brady remarked, “Until we modernize air traffic control, disruptions will only grow.” The current situation poses significant challenges for airlines, passengers, and the broader aviation industry, which is already grappling with the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
