Flood Alert Issued in Gloucestershire as High Tides Approach

A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Wye Estuary in Gloucestershire, where high tides pose a risk of flooding to roads and low-lying land. The alert, indicating that flooding is possible and residents should prepare, is in effect from September 8 to September 10, with the highest tides expected between 20:45 on Monday and 21:45 on Wednesday.
According to the Environment Agency, flooding to roads and low-lying areas adjacent to the Wye Estuary is anticipated from Redbrook to Chepstow. The predicted tide peaks include a height of 7.2 meters at Newport on both September 8 at 20:45 and September 9 at 09:00. The agency has advised residents to avoid using low-lying footpaths near watercourses during this period.
Additional Flood Alerts for Tidal River Avon
In addition to the alert for the Wye Estuary, there is also a flood alert for the Tidal River Avon at Bristol, Pill, and Shirehampton. The Environment Agency has forecast higher than normal spring tides in these areas over the coming days. While flooding of roads and low-lying land is possible, the agency does not expect property flooding at this time.
The most affected areas include the tidal River Avon from Sea Mills to Conham in Bristol, as well as regions between the Avonmouth Bridge and Shirehampton Park. Further flooding could occur during high water until Thursday due to sustained high tides. The agency is closely monitoring conditions and plans to close flood gates at Pill and Shirehampton as a precaution.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution near beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, and roads, where conditions may become hazardous.
The weather outlook indicates a mix of sun and showers for the week. On Monday evening, some areas may experience late sunshine, though showers remain possible, particularly in coastal regions. Temperatures may drop to a minimum of 6 °C overnight.
On Tuesday, showery rain is expected to become more persistent across Cornwall and spread eastward, potentially heavy in places with the possibility of thunder. A maximum temperature of 19 °C is forecast for the day. The outlook from Wednesday to Friday suggests a changeable pattern, featuring sunny spells and blustery showers, some of which may be heavy and accompanied by hail and thunder. Breezy conditions are anticipated throughout the week, with temperatures gradually cooling.
Residents are urged to stay informed about local conditions and heed any warnings issued by the Environment Agency.
