Wem Heritage Morning Revives Local History with Engaging Events
Wem Civic Society is set to host a lively Heritage Morning on October 14, 2023, aimed at bringing the town’s rich history to life through a series of engaging events. Highlights include a photographic exhibition titled 400 Wemians – 40 Years Ago, which will be displayed throughout the morning. The event promises to attract both history enthusiasts and local residents eager to learn more about their community.
At 9:45 am, Oliver Richardson will present an illustrated talk entitled “Wem: From the Roundheads to the Railways.” This insightful presentation will explore the significant historical developments that have shaped Wem, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the town’s evolution over the centuries.
Following the talk, a guided walk led by local historian David Smith will commence at 11:15 am. Participants will have the opportunity to discover “The Bits of Wem That Aren’t There Anymore,” a fascinating journey through the remnants of the past that have disappeared from the town’s landscape.
In addition to these events, a selection of local history booklets will be available for purchase. Titles include “Trades and Education in Bygone Wem,” “The Old Inns of Wem,” “The Changing Face of Villages,” “Bygone Industries of North Shropshire,” and “The Streets of Old Wem.” A new booklet based on the morning’s talk will also be available, alongside cards featuring historical images of Wem, providing a tangible connection to the town’s heritage.
Admission for the illustrated talk and/or guided walk is priced at £2.50, while members of the Wem Civic Society can attend for free. This initiative not only fosters community engagement but also encourages a greater appreciation for the local history among residents and visitors alike.
For those interested in participating, further information can be obtained by emailing [email protected] or by calling 01939 235443. The event promises to be a memorable occasion for all who attend, spotlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating Wem’s historical narrative.
