Housework Helps Lower Blood Pressure, Say Experts
Research conducted by health experts indicates that engaging in housework can provide significant benefits for physical health, particularly in lowering blood pressure. Activities such as scrubbing floors or vacuuming for just 30 minutes a few times a week can lead to health improvements, as long as these tasks are performed at a moderate intensity.
Dr. Nish Manek, a prominent health specialist, explained to BBC Science Focus that moderate intensity means working hard enough to feel warm and breathe more quickly, yet still being able to maintain a conversation. “Aiming for 30 minutes of such activities can significantly help,” she noted. High blood pressure is a pressing health concern for millions in the UK, as it increases the risk of conditions like heart disease, stroke, and kidney issues.
Celebrities have also shared their experiences, highlighting the fitness benefits of household chores. Stacey Solomon, a well-known television personality, remarked that her active lifestyle, which includes “running around after the kids all day” and “hoovering the house,” contributes to her fitness levels. Similarly, actor Colin Firth has noted that he incorporates exercises into his cleaning routine, performing “bottle bicep curls” to mimic gym workouts.
Housework as a Fitness Tool
Celebrity personal trainer Cornel Chin, who has worked with clients like Leonardo DiCaprio, emphasized the importance of housework in maintaining physical activity. He stated, “I teach a lot of my clients how to incorporate exercise into their daily chores. It’s a very good way to add stretching and strengthening exercises to their fitness programme.” While he acknowledged that housework alone may not provide an adequate aerobic workout, he asserted that it still offers various health benefits.
According to Chin, vacuuming and mopping are among the most effective chores for fitness. He recommends adding movements like squats or lunges to these activities to enhance their effectiveness. Research indicates that isometric exercises, which involve holding a static position, are particularly beneficial for lowering blood pressure. An example of this is squatting against a wall instead of performing continuous movements.
In conclusion, the findings suggest that incorporating housework into one’s routine can yield health benefits, particularly in managing blood pressure. As many people seek ways to stay fit, everyday chores can serve as a practical solution.
