Keir Starmer Responds to Violence at Tommy Robinson Rally in London

But we will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin.” He further asserted that Britain is a nation built on “tolerance, diversity and respect,” and vowed that the flag would not be surrendered to those who misuse it.

The protest was met with a counter-demonstration of approximately 5,000 anti-racism campaigners, highlighting the deep divisions within society. Following the unrest, authorities made 24 arrests for offenses including affray, violent disorder, assault, and criminal damage.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the violence, promising that those engaging in criminal activities would “face the full force of the law.” The unrest has prompted calls from officials for renewed discussions on immigration and related issues, which have become contentious topics in British society.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle described the rally as a “klaxon call” for MPs to engage with public concerns. He acknowledged that there are communities feeling increasingly isolated and that figures like Robinson tap into societal grievances that have roots in past economic crises. Kyle remarked, “There are communities that are being driven further apart… these are moments that are klaxon calls to us in public life to redouble our efforts.”

A notable moment during the protest was the appearance of Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and X, who urged attendees to “fight back” against the government. His remarks were met with criticism from Kyle, who found them “slightly incomprehensible” and “totally inappropriate.” Despite the chaos, Kyle maintained that the event demonstrated the vibrancy of free speech and assembly in the country.
