Avoid Critical Mistakes While Driving Through Floods
As heavy rainfall begins to sweep across the UK this September, the Met Office warns of potential flash flooding on roads nationwide. While many motorists are aware of the dangers of driving during severe downpours, travel may still be unavoidable. In these challenging conditions, adhering to safe driving practices is essential to prevent accidents and protect vehicles.
Driving instructor David Thomas from Stourbridge has shared vital advice for navigating through floodwaters. He emphasizes that one critical mistake can lead to engine failure, particularly if vehicles become submerged in deep water. Thomas took to TikTok to present his guidelines, aiming to help drivers avoid costly damage to their cars.
In a recent video, Thomas highlights the dangers of navigating through flooded areas. He points out a significant puddle at a junction, where water has accumulated, creating hazardous conditions for drivers. Observing a smaller vehicle stranded nearby, he notes, “Engine flooded. You know what they probably did was come off the gas.”
To safely drive through flooded sections, Thomas advises motorists to shift into first gear before approaching deep water. He stresses the importance of ensuring that there is adequate space on the other side of the puddle before accelerating through it in one continuous motion. Stopping midway can lead to serious vehicle damage.
“The worst thing you want to do is come off the gas at any point while you’re going through deep water, because water then goes into the engine,” Thomas explains. He clarifies that keeping the engine revs high is crucial to creating a bow wave that can push water away from the engine bay.
According to Thomas, maintaining constant accelerator pressure is vital for preventing water from entering the exhaust system. He advises drivers to keep the engine revs steady while slipping the clutch in a manual vehicle. This technique helps ensure that water does not stall the engine.
After passing through floodwaters, Thomas recommends gently testing the brakes to dry them out. This precaution can help ensure that the vehicle remains safe to drive following a potentially dangerous encounter with flooding.
With the Met Office expecting substantial rainfall, drivers in the UK should remain vigilant. By implementing Thomas’s advice, motorists can navigate flooded roads more safely and reduce the risk of damaging their vehicles during challenging weather conditions.
