Leicestershire Man Faces Uncertain Future After Mesothelioma Diagnosis

A man from Birstall, Leicestershire, has revealed the profound impact of a terminal diagnosis on his life, following years of potential asbestos exposure during his employment. Michael Ross, aged 84, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the lining of the lungs, in October 2024 after experiencing severe breathlessness and a persistent cough.

Michael’s exposure to asbestos likely occurred during his time as a plumber’s mate at William Freer Limited in Leicester during the 1960s. He recalls working in boiler houses where he was in close proximity to lagged pipes and boilers. The insulation on these pipes was often damaged, leading to significant dust and debris that he frequently had to clean.

In August 2024, Michael began to notice troubling symptoms. Following medical tests, he received the devastating news of his mesothelioma diagnosis two months later. Since then, he has started immunotherapy treatment in January 2025, which aims to enhance his immune system’s ability to combat the cancer. Regular hospital visits have become a part of his routine, a stark change from the active lifestyle he once led.

Reflecting on his life before the diagnosis, Michael shared, “I’ve always been active. My late wife, Valerie, and I enjoyed music and singing, even performing at campsites in France and hotels in Jersey.” He also enjoyed sports such as tennis, badminton, cycling, and crown green bowls. “Now, everything has changed. I get breathless easily and can’t do the things I used to enjoy,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Michael remains determined to fight the disease and spend quality time with his family. He expressed a desire for answers regarding his asbestos exposure, stating, “Before my diagnosis, I’d not heard of mesothelioma, but I now know how bad it is. The least I deserve is answers.”

To pursue this, Michael has enlisted the help of lawyers from Irwin Mitchell, who are investigating the circumstances surrounding his exposure to asbestos and seeking compensation on his behalf. They are particularly interested in speaking with former colleagues who worked with Michael at William Freer Limited.

Rebecca Wood, a lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, commented on the seriousness of Michael’s situation. “Mesothelioma is a devastating illness. Michael’s case serves as a stark reminder of the terrible legacy asbestos has left behind, with its effects often becoming apparent many years after exposure. While nothing can replace his diagnosis, we’re committed to providing him with the answers he deserves.”

The firm encourages anyone who worked at William Freer Limited in the 1960s and has relevant information about the working conditions to reach out. Interested individuals can contact Rebecca Wood at Irwin Mitchell at 0114 294 7920 or via email at [email protected].

Attempts to contact William Freer Limited for comment have not yet received a response. As Michael continues his battle with mesothelioma, his story highlights the long-term consequences of asbestos exposure and the need for accountability in such cases.
