Manchester United Eyes Carlos Baleba as Transfer Interest Renewed
Manchester United’s interest in Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba is poised to resurface, with a potential transfer window in 2026 being discussed. The club previously sought to secure Baleba’s services during the summer transfer window, but negotiations faltered due to Brighton’s substantial asking price, believed to be similar to the £115 million fee they received for Moises Caicedo in 2023.
Despite United’s unsuccessful attempts to bolster their midfield in August, the club’s admiration for Baleba, particularly from manager Ruben Amorim, remains strong. Amorim made the decision not to pursue additional midfield options as the transfer window closed, with only goalkeeper Senne Lammens joining the squad.
Baleba’s form has faced challenges this season, highlighted by his substitution at half-time during Brighton’s recent match against Tottenham. Following this game, Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, addressed the impact of United’s interest on the young player. He noted, “Everyone has to understand with Carlos, he’s a very young player… He needs help from us.” Hurzeler emphasized the importance of supporting Baleba as he navigates the pressures of potential moves to larger clubs.
He acknowledged the psychological effects such interest can have on a young athlete: “For sure, when a young boy reads that there’s interest from Manchester United… it might affect him deep.” Hurzeler underscored the need for Baleba to stay grounded and focused on his development at Brighton.
According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, United’s interest in Baleba is ongoing, with Amorim’s appreciation of the Cameroon international potentially being a decisive factor in any future move. Romano remarked on Baleba’s recent performance against Tottenham, stating it “was a really poor one” and did not reflect his true capabilities.
Romano further elaborated on the dynamics of the previous transfer discussions, indicating that Baleba had a desire to join Manchester United but was respectful towards Brighton throughout the process. The reluctance of Brighton to negotiate a transfer fee was a sticking point, with the club’s chairman firmly denying any possibility of a transfer before the summer of 2025.
As United continues to monitor Baleba’s progress, the club remains committed to scouting players who align with their vision under Amorim’s leadership. This ongoing interest will likely keep Baleba in the spotlight as the January transfer window approaches, while Brighton will aim to support his development during this challenging period.
Maintaining a close watch on Baleba’s performance, United hopes to capitalize on their interest in the future while ensuring that the young midfielder continues to grow within the competitive environment of the Premier League.
