Rooney Clarifies Relationship with Ronaldo, Backs Messi as GOAT
Wayne Rooney has publicly addressed long-standing rumors regarding his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that he does not harbor hatred towards the football star. In a recent interview on the show “Rio Ferdinand Presents,” Rooney clarified his stance in the ongoing debate over who is the greatest of all time (GOAT) between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Rooney stated, “People think I hate him. I love him. I think he’s an absolute genius and what he’s doing is incredible.” This statement counters perceptions that have persisted since his comments favoring Messi as the superior player. He elaborated, saying, “I think just because I’ve said that I think Messi is better than Ronaldo, people think I don’t like Cristiano.” Rooney emphasized that his preference for Messi should not be misconstrued as a personal attack on Ronaldo.
Revisiting Their Bond
During their time together at Manchester United, Rooney and Ronaldo developed a close relationship, which he sought to highlight in the interview. Rooney remarked on Ronaldo’s fierce competitive nature, referring to him as “a killer” and reiterating the respect he holds for his former teammate. He acknowledged that the misunderstanding about his feelings towards Ronaldo stems from his appreciation for Messi’s playing style.
Despite clearly leaning toward Messi, Rooney maintained a deep respect for Ronaldo’s accomplishments. “Cristiano is an absolute genius in what he’s doing; he’s just turned 40, and what he’s doing is incredible. I take my hat off to him,” Rooney asserted. His comments reflect the broader admiration for Ronaldo’s resilience and goal-scoring ability, even as he competes in Saudi Arabia.
Rooney also praised Ronaldo’s mindset, describing it as unmatched in football. He stated, “Cristiano Ronaldo has got something in his brain which I don’t think anyone has got. He’s got this mindset and mentality, which is way beyond anything I’ve seen in football.” This acknowledgment of Ronaldo’s determination highlights the high standards he set for his teammates during their time together.
Preference for Messi
Despite his respect for Ronaldo, Rooney has consistently chosen Messi as his preferred player in the GOAT debate. He explained, “I absolutely love Messi, love watching him play,” attributing his preference to Messi’s unique playing style and flair. Rooney noted the challenge of comparing two legendary players, stating, “I don’t think you can argue with any of them two.”
Rooney’s comments shed light on the complexity of fan expectations surrounding the GOAT debate. While many seek a definitive answer, he believes that both players are among the best to have ever played the game. “The two best players to have played the game are Messi and Ronaldo, in my opinion,” Rooney concluded.
The interview has reignited discussions among football fans regarding the legendary status of both Rooney’s former teammates. His candid remarks reflect not only his personal preferences but also a broader respect for the two icons who have shaped modern football.
