Farmers Invited to Share Experiences in New Research Project
A new research initiative is reaching out to farmers to address the challenges they face, from food security to climate change. Led by researcher Bethan John, the project aims to facilitate a series of free storytelling and filmmaking workshops that will enable farmers to share their real-life experiences. The workshops are scheduled to take place on 1 October 2023 at Bancyfelin Village Hall and on 2 October 2023 at Crymych Market Hall, both from 17:30 to 20:30.
This initiative is designed to foster dialogue around critical themes such as economic uncertainty, community resilience, and ecological challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to create community-made films that capture their stories and insights. As someone who grew up in a rural farming community near Carmarthen, John emphasizes the importance of harnessing local knowledge.
“There is so much expertise within the rural communities where I live,” said Bethan John. “One of the aims of this project is to capture and value this knowledge, while exploring a diversity of views and experiences.”
The workshops will consist of small groups and will be conducted bilingually, ensuring that all participants feel comfortable sharing their perspectives. Activities will encourage idea generation and promote discussions, while participants receive comprehensive training in storytelling and filmmaking techniques. No prior experience is required, making it accessible to all interested farmers.
John noted the significant role of storytelling in addressing complex issues. “There’s a wealth of academic research that demonstrates the importance of storytelling and creative expression as a way of reflecting on and engaging with complex issues that can help solve real-world problems,” she stated.
Farmers and individuals from farming backgrounds who wish to participate are encouraged to reach out to Bethan John for more information. If the scheduled dates are not convenient, additional workshops may be considered based on interest.
This project represents a collaboration between local organizations and is supported by funding aimed at promoting community engagement and resilience. Through this effort, farmers will not only share their challenges but also contribute to a broader understanding of the agricultural landscape and its future.
