On September 29, 2025, Wigan Council organized the Progress With Unity Children and Young People’s Health Summit at The Edge Conference Centre in Wigan. This significant event gathered council officers, partner organizations, and representatives from the voluntary and community sectors to address pressing health and wellbeing issues affecting children and young people in the Borough.
The summit served as a platform for various stakeholders to collaborate and share insights on improving youth health services. Discussions revolved around current challenges, innovative strategies, and the role of community engagement in fostering a healthier environment for the young population. Participants emphasized the importance of collective action and resource sharing to enhance health outcomes.
Key Initiatives and Collaborative Efforts
During the summit, attendees reviewed existing programs and proposed new initiatives aimed at tackling mental health, nutrition, and physical activity among children and adolescents. Representatives highlighted successful community-driven projects that have already made an impact, showcasing how local efforts can lead to significant improvements in youth health metrics.
One notable focus was on mental health resources, with speakers advocating for increased funding and support for mental health services tailored specifically for young people. The summit underscored the necessity of integrating mental health education into school curricula to foster awareness and reduce stigma.
Another key topic was the importance of physical activity in promoting overall health. Participants discussed the potential of community sports programs to engage youth and encourage healthier lifestyles. Collaborations with local schools and sports clubs were suggested as effective ways to maximize participation and create lasting change.
Future Directions and Community Involvement
Looking ahead, Wigan Council aims to build on the momentum generated by the summit. Plans are in place to form a coalition of stakeholders committed to implementing the strategies discussed. This coalition will focus on monitoring progress, evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives, and ensuring that the voices of young people are included in decision-making processes.
Wigan Council is determined to enhance its support for children and young people, acknowledging that their health is a critical investment for the future. As highlighted during the summit, collaboration among local authorities, healthcare providers, and community organizations is vital in achieving sustainable improvements.
